Wire services reported that there was a bomb blast outside the Marriott hotel in the nation’s capital of Islamabad today. The Associated Press reported, “A huge explosion ripped through part of the heavily guarded Marriott Hotel in Pakistan’s capital on Saturday. Many people, including foreigners, were seen running out, some of them stained with blood.” Reuters cited a “senior police official,” who said, “The explosion happened as a car reached the barricade outside the hotel.” No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, although wire services have indicated that it may have been a suicide attack. A recently updated AP piece cited hospital official Raja Ejaz, who said at least two people were killed, while 25 were wounded.
UPDATE [1059 EST]: As expected, news agencies are reporting varying numbers of casualties. Dawn News reportedly confirmed that at least 25 died in the attack. The news agency added, “Fifteen of dead are reportedly at the Pims hospital in Islamabad.” Although both BBC News and Geo TV reported similar numbers to Dawn, ARY Television reported a much higher casualty count, noting that at least 40 people were killed, and a 100 were injured. The BBC’s Barbara Plett who is at the scene says that the entire front section of the Marriott Hotel has been blown out and wreckage is everywhere. [Image from AFP]
UPDATE [1130 EST]: Dawn News is now reporting that 30 people are dead from the Marriott blast, adding that a Danish diplomat and three US citizens are among the injured. BBC News is reporting that 40 people have been killed, and BBC correspondent Plett reported that “about two-thirds of the 290-room hotel is on fire, and the wounded and dead are still being brought out, on stretchers or wrapped in sheets.” CNN, in its coverage, reported, “The blast caused a natural gas leak that set the Marriott Hotel on fire.”
Several news outlets are framing the blast in light of President Zardari’s Parliament address, which happened two hours before the incident. According to the BBC, “In his first speech to MPs since he replaced Pervez Musharraf in August, he vowed instead to ‘root out terrorism and extremism wherever and whenever they may rear their ugly heads.’”
UPDATE 1145 [EST]: News reports are saying people are still inside the hotel and people have indicated the hotel is in danger of collapsing. A recently updated AP wire reported, “The blast left a vast crater, some 30 feet deep in front of the main building, where flames poured from the windows and rescuers ferried bloodied bodies from the gutted building. Witnesses and officials said a large truck had rammed the high metal gate of the hotel at about 8 p.m., when the restaurants would have been packed with diners, including Muslims breaking the Ramadan fast.”
UPDATE 1225 [EST]: News agencies are still reporting similar casualty numbers, [see above], but CNN reported that at least 200 were injured in the attack. The death toll is expected to rise as reports continue to come in. According to GEO News, “A rescue operation is underway to bring out the people trapped inside the hotel.” Although media outlets are indicating that foreigners are among those killed in the blast, CNN reported, “Most of the dead appeared to be drivers who were waiting with their cars outside the hotel, and hotel staff — most of them security guards.” [Image below from Dawn News]

UPDATE 1250 [EST]: AAJ Television reported the bomb blast brought down the ceiling in a banquet room where there were about 200 to 300 people at a meal to break the fast during the holy month of Ramazan. Imtiaz Gul was reportedly one of these people and told news agencies, “We just ran for cover, I could see a lot of injured people lying around me.” Reuters cited statements by the hotel’s owner, Sadruddin Hashwani, who said the vehicle carrying the bomb “was stopped at the front barrier and was being checked by guards after a bomb-sniffing dog raised the alarm.” He told reporters, “The guard dog alerted them and when they started searching the vehicle the man blew himself up.” News channels are currently indicating the explosion of first the smaller car, followed by a “dumper truck” that held “packaging material” behind the car, [CHUP will follow up on those details.]
UPDATE 1340 [EST]: The BBC’s Barbara Plett says the emergency services have been unable to reach the upper floors of the hotel, where more people are feared to be trapped. There are continuing fears that the hotel will collapse. The NY Times quoted a guard at the Marriott, Amjad Ali Khan, who, when asked who he thought perpetrated the blast, responded, “They are terrorists…They threatened a few days ago. We heard there were four to five suicide bombers on the loose.” [Image below from the BBC]
UPDATE 1821 [EST]: Interior Ministry spokesman Rehman Malik confirmed the above police official’s statement, [see above] telling reporters “the government had received word of a possible attack near the parliamentary offices.” Dawn quoted him saying, “We had intelligence reports two days ago that some incident might take place.” The Associated Press cited statements by Senior Police Official Asghar Raza Gardaizi, who said the blast, which reverberated throughout Islamabad, was caused by more than 2,204 pounds (1,000 kilograms) of explosives.” A few hours after the attack, President Zardari addressed the nation on television, stating, “My heart cries tears of blood, I can understand your pain, I want to ask you to turn this pain into your strength.” CNN reported that Zardari described extremism as “a cancer, which we will finish,” adding, “In the holy month of Ramadan, no Muslim can act in this way, these people are not Muslims…I appeal to all democratic nations to help us get rid of this menace.”

Our media never gives accurate figures. In their zeal for breaking news they never bother to verify figures.
Yeah that’s per usual in the direct aftermath of bomb blasts. I’m trying to give as many casualty figures as possible to give you the spectrum of numbers. In a few hours, those numbers should equal out once we have more official statements.
How can extremists justify killing Muslims, especially in Ramadan? Its beyond me.
Yeah, and what’s worse is the blast occurred right during iftar – when people were breaking their fast. How can people do that? It’s beyond any form of logic or reasoning.
I don’t get this. If these people are muslims, how can they kill on the time of iftar.
We need to acknowledge that this is an internal issue that affect our country. And we need to unite against these people and be extremely hard, so our country can survive.
President Zadari certainly has a number of issues that he must deal with during his time in power, but this is obviously the most pressing. His reaction and ability to unify the government in times of crises like these will be critical in gaining legitimacy and support.
This is such a BRUTAL and sad situation…Didnt know these bloody extremists had the nerve to commit this heinous crime in the holy month of Ramadan…May they rot in hell.
I am watching AAJ TV online and seeing dead bodies being carried around…seems like a mini 9/11 version of Pakistan.
I am by no means any supporter of Asif Zardari …but if he wants to prove himself worthy of anything..he better get his act together and try to do something NOW…
Latest dev….News reports that bombed hotel might collapse..
At the very least at least politicians are now admitting that this is “our war.” All that’s been going on in the NWFP hasn’t been able to convince them that it’s their war, maybe a bomb in the marriot will. Hopefully this explosion is also a nail in the coffin of extremism in Pakistan. I don’t think the extremists will be gaining many recruits after this one. Who knows though-they seem to just flow out of the woodwork. You guys think that this kind of explosion will minimize sympathies for these people in Pakistan? The previous blasts haven’t minimized sympathies much, but this one seems a bit different. What do you guys think?
May Allah guide our freaking rulers to the right path who do nothing but destroy Pakistan and kill innocent people!
Go to hell Zardari!
All those Muslims who died today are martyrs!
Allah hi Pakistan ka bhala kare.. it’s no longer a safe place!
Im in shock… not much to say really.
Innocent people being killed again… I wonder if this is how people in NWFP feel when the army goes on the offensive—-
this was too close to home— how do you even respond to such an attack.
Shaheryar – Dawn actually did an interesting piece that I was going to link to this morning before the blast occurred and I started to cover this – http://www.dawn.net/wps/wcm/connect/Dawn%20Content%20Library/dawn/news/pakistan/learning+about+militancy. I think an interesting question is why the Pakistani people have not completely embraced this as “our war” – is it due to U.S. strikes that confuse sentiments on the issue? Definitely will do a follow up piece on it later. GEO news just did a really poignant commercial in between the news, condemning such violence.
@ Sara, I’m really curious – why was your first inclination to blame the Pakistani rulers and not the militants who may have perpetrated the attack? Am just wondering because I’ve seen that reaction before and I think it’s significant.
Its infuriating to think that it is other Muslims carrying out these attacks. Not only is it Ramzan, but the people to die first were drivers waiting outside the hotel. I really hope and pray that this serves as a wake up call for the government and they start addressing the issue more seriously.
may allah bless our country..
yeah pakistan is now not a safer place..
govt should act seriously now..
instead of fighting with each other.
they should get together for some tight securities.
and just dont listen to what america says
Like everyone else, I’m completely shocked. Not because I didn’t expect this to happen, but I really thought these people wouldn’t do such a thing during Ramadan. Our rulers, sadly, will make no kind of difference. Their lack of affective control and dialogue with these factions play a great roll in these attacks. Uneducated boys and men turn to these groups who nurture them and make them feel as though there is hope for them and their families if they follow them. Instead of stealing money maybe they should create youth centers in Pakistan and educate them the right way. Unfortunately, the likelihood of that happening is slim to none. I can do nothing but echo everyone else’s comments – only God can help us now!
I don’t think it is very surprising that people would blame the government. After all, isn’t it the government’s first responsibility to protect its people? And that is exactly why some Pakistanis might be hesitant to embrace the struggle against militants or terrorism, etc.
Connect the dots– The US is helping to de-stabilize Pakistan with air strikes and incursions in response to militant attacks across the border with Afghanistan. It has taken the Pakistani government a long time to stand up / respond to US actions publicly. If you do not like the US, you will probably resent the government for being unable to protect the country’s territorial integrity.
On top of that, the government cannot protect it’s citizens from domestic actors (or other foreign actors) as well. Very frustrating situation especially when you factor in the reputation for leaders in the country to care more about personal advancement than national interest.
What a mess
kalsoom, thats an interesting piece..fahad raises an interesting point as well about how people in the nwfp feel when the army goes on the offensive.
The funny part of all this, Our TV looks like an advertising media for these Fanatic Group of People. I have never ever seen a single death body in even 9/11 attacks. None of the developed countries shows acurate death toll, the actual damage and security loop holes of their country. No Matter What happens. !!! No matter how many people die..!!
It is Only our previliged Pakistan. Where Media do not show strong hands of our Security but Strong hold of Terrorists. Result:
- People gets scared to live in Pakistan.
- People aboard avoid to visit or invest in Pakistan.
- Terrorist are laughing, watching TV & celebrating, what a good job.
- And US sees this situation with only solution, Let us jump in your country and We will solve it, by killing anyone & everyone with beard and reading Quran.
Does anyone seriously think that giving us more knowledge about bombs and deaths will improve our living or will help Pakistan is any way and i repeat in any way to make our Nation a proud name outside OR……. Just giving material to outside world to let them think…. Give me 1 good reason … why Pakis are Not Terrorist… Why we think of human .. when we see a pakistani.
See how Damn intellegent we are Guys.
Thanks, Kalsoom for monitoring the situation and providing these detailed updates for us; many of whom are affected by this personally.
The govt can be held responsible here but in reality there is no way to stop a suicide bomber. Radical sentiments are so strong that there are many such suicide bombers roaming the cities looking for their next target. Pakistan has become a hot bed of such activity because the govt has failed to provide basic human needs to its people i.e. electricity, clean water, sanitation, food, education etc. People living in cities are suffering from high inflation, imagine what its like for the less privileged (majority in Pakistan). With poor living conditions like this make it easy for youth to be lured into radicalism as there is not much else (education/career wise) to do.
In the short term this extremist movement within Pakistan has to be stopped by an equally strong movement by Pakistanis to rid their country from radicals. People have to take a stand against radicalism and violence. Its going to take more than just law enforcement to control the current state of affairs. We can’t let our country be destroyed internally. Ideas welcome?
In the long term Pakistan must provide basic human needs to the majority and focus on education. Political turmoil has to end. I am not a Zardari supporter but as Pakistani’s we must unite with govt to bring about such social and educational reform in the country. This will not be easy given the current conditions, but we must try to do all we can. Ideas welcome here too?
Pakistanis already have a tough task ahead of them. Lets not make it any worse by not taking action now.

Fahd raises a good point people in islamabad having been living in a bubble without a bit of concern for what has been happening in pukthunwkha.
Its the poor who will always suffer. Watching the video its a given that none of the security guards and many drivers (if you’ve been to the marriot you know they are all gather at the gates) are going to bear the brunt of the casualties.
Many people blamed Mushy for the bombings and said it would stop with him leaving office. I want to hear what’s their excuse now?
I am just shocked beyond words.
I feel Pakistanis face 9-11s everyday.
Every freaking day now.
@ BATILANS HAVE STRUCK AGAIN,
WE MUST TRY TO IDENTIFY WHO ARE THESE ?
THEY ARE ESSENTIALLY ANTI-PAKISTAN TRIANGLE

It is indeed very sad what is happening in Pakistan. WHY? why would muslims target muslims. Or are they really targetting someone else? In anyway, loss of innocent lives is unacceptable. I read this article about suspicious activity in Marriot a night or so before the attack.
http://thenews.jang.com.pk/top_story_detail.asp?Id=17401
@HN, & others
please try to understand the vulnerability of any nation,
religion, civilization, movements etc , all of them had and
still heve weak points, where any type or size of enemy
can exploite, we have to stop mourning about what a
muslim is doing to another muslim, at such an obsessive
way that it becomes even doubtfull for any of us, to believe
in the sincerity of the commenters, e.g. take ATP
Pakistaniat.com, this blog has 85% commenters rediculing
the muslims for or against, each other, many commenters on ATP have a doubtfull background and appartenance proved
by their continuation of such attitude of a sheer propaganda
from “that ” corner ” of our society, the corner, hidden, secret,
conspicuous, proselytiste, dangerously involved in double
cross games in local politics and religion, and they hate
Pakistan’s constitution of 1973, curiously ?
So, either is power game of survival instinct, or an
invaded and occupied land, but thats the end, you are
reduced to nothing, look at Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan,
OUR generation will fight for Pakistan, as there is no other
alternative.
Our country is the Islamic repulic of Pakistan, so whatever happens or stems from it will be painted as an act of Muslims. I think my point was missed, or I did not clarify it enough…….Things will be exploited in many ways by using the name of “Islamic terrorists”. We should definitely look beyond that. If you read the article by Graham Fuller titled “A World Without Islam” it gives us a new perspective of looking at things and will make us realize that by taking Islam out from the equation the world will still end up where it is now, and it explains why. It’s a good read. As far as mournig is concerned, it is still sad that innocent peolpe are dying, whether muslims or non-muslims.
@HN,
By whome shall we be judged ? Was the very first Islamic
state named as Islamic Republic of Madinah ? The only
Democratic State ! having a written CONSTITUTION with
56 articles, the first one being ” we the people of Madinah….”
We must stop having complexes of being ” watched by our
big goons brothers who have committed genocide in the name
of Jesus and Moses & Rama Khrisha and Satsri Akaal, the
whole human history is filled with such cases everywhere.
We are, of course, proud to be called the FIRST ISLAMIC REPUBLIC …….. in the contemporary history, some nations
or religions hate this daring perspective of muslims, because
they themselves have ruined their own reiglions , cult or civilization, should we look for “their ” ashirvad all the time ?
We created the nation in 1947, gave a constitution and Laws, but have we ever respected them ? even today,
do WE RESPECT THEM ?? We know, that Islam being 80% social can give us everything a modern society needs i.e
freedoms and LAWS, but, since we were corrupt, disobedient,
rebellion against Al-Mighty and materialist of its own kind, we,
therefore, are subjected to the most inhuman kind of treatment on this planet by the marginal thugs.
Does the Hindus ? Christians, Jews, Marxists, communists
respect their committements ?
OR ANY SECULAR, AETHIEST does it ?
I know many orientalists with their “Philosophical approach”
to Islam, (personally, I am least interested in them).
Every nation has their sects, extremists, fanatics, fundos,
bearded or Gunjas, Jahils, sado-mazos, there are
300.000 Christians sects with all the catagories. And USA is
infested with them. In all the western countries, they have a
special ministry of anti-sect. Recently in France the Scientology
sect has been facing a judgement of dismantling of the sect.
It hurts every Pakistani watching another Pakistani murdered, but think also of Iraqis, Afghanis, Palestinians, Kashmiris. And as you said, Muslim or non-muslim.
Its well known about Jewish, Christian, Arab, Marxist’s or any ” new” Prophets’s history, but believe me, Islamic history of post-Khulafa is worth going thru.
Remember, Al-Mighty does not need us and our States
to represent HIM. We all, have abundantly disappointed HIM.
Sorry, for such a long comment.
cheers
@Sheharyar Mirza,
your no .8
you are still quoting “extremists” nailing them nails in
their coffin. Before the term “Islamic extremists ” was used
freely by all the ” experts”, but, curiously you have omitted
“Islamic “, according to you, is it no more Islamic ?
Who are these heavey explosive-fixers, with such precisive
timings and “educated ” approach to the marriots adminstration,
and passing all the way from the main street next to the
hotel, stopping at the barrier waiting, was it not that they filmed and at the same time shot the chauffeur to eliminate the last proof and achieved what they wanted. Is your respectable journalistic instinct allows you to finger point at those “extremists of un-nailed coffin” ?

@ Partisans of Islam are called Hazb-al-Islam, if I may
apply good and apppropriate arabic terminology.
Fidaeen is a term already used in Palestine, Libanon,
Iraq, by the same mercenaries, now they have started in
Pakistan directly, there are 11000 Western mercenaries,
” protecting ” the petrol and eliminating the Iraqis, via
4 grand companies of recruitement, one, I discovered in
France.
Can you imagine what crap our journalists trying
to invent and forward it with delicatesse !!
This was a heinous act, and the act should be considered grave, tragic and sick regardless of whether or not it is Ramadan or Iftar time. Committing such a crime is sinful and awful and brutal regardless of what day of the year it is. People who commit such acts are even sicker because they do it during the holy month since in their perverse, empty minds they feel their message will resonate more. Very sad time for Pakistan.
