A friend passed along a story to me yesterday, which reported that militants in Swat had ordered a ban on girls’ education from January 15. Sikander Ali, a father of four girls, told the IRIN news agency, “They [Taliban] are savages and we’re like a helpless herd, with no one to protect us.” Ali, a government official, said he heard the recent warning by Shah Dauran, deputy leader of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of Maulana Fazalullah “on a clandestine FM radio station.” He told the news agency,
He said we must take our daughters out of all schools – private or public – by 15 January 2009 at the latest. Failing this, he said the schools will be bombed and violators would face death. He also said they will throw acid into the faces of our daughters if we don’t comply, like their counterparts did in Afghanistan some months back.
According to Dawn, if such a move was to go through in Swat, 40,000 girls would be out of school. However, since the report was released the overarching TTP leadership reportedly tried to distance themselves, claiming they were “not opposed to female education, so long as the girls are properly veiled.” They allegedly “promised to probe the issue and get the Taliban in Swat to rescind their decision about which they are now being equivocal.”
This recent Dawn editorial echoes my sentiments exactly:
[The bombing of girls’ schools] certainly has profound implications in terms of the political and social message it sends. In a society where women are an underclass by virtue of their gender and are denied equal advantages of education – only 36 percent of women over 15 years of age are literate compared to 63 percent men – bombing of girls’ schools comes as a warning to parents to desist from changing this pattern. In a wider sense it also means that no change in the status of women will be brooked. Since the education of girls poses a threat to the ideological beliefs of the Taliban they want to resist it. This should also come as a wake-up call to the policymakers in Pakistan. The emergence of the Taliban reflects, amongst others, our failure to make education accessible to all and inculcate tolerance, compassion and humanism in the population.
Even if this school ban gets overturned, the fact that it was even a possibility is problematic. Moreover, the reality is that the bombing of girls’ schools in Pakistan’s northwest has continued unhindered for over a year, despite “warnings” from the Pakistani authorities. According to Dawn, “In the last 14 months they have destroyed over 100 schools in Swat.” Who protects these families? Who protects these little girls – not just their right to an education, but their right to safety?
[…] and we’re like a helpless herd, with no one to protect us.” […] Read more at: CHUP! – Changing Up Pakistan 15 january, counterparts, deputy leader, echoes, female education, fm radio station, four […]
Thanks for posting on this story. The Dawn editorial really says it all, and I agree that the possibility alone of having such a school ban is atrocious enough. And where is the government, as you said Kalsoom, in protecting these girls’ right to both education and safety?
This is a tragic. Are there any groups or individuals taking a stand in the region against these decrees banning girls from an education? And how potent is this threat? Does it come from outside fringe elements, or are they imbedded within the societal structure of the region?
@Reimas,
this threat is not at all potent, rumours run by Mr.
Ali, a Govt. official ? can you believe that ? doing
propaganda in favour of ANP Govt. and what aboput that
clandestine FM radio, takfiris are part of Batilans
the Consortium of International Terrorism, are run by
Indians, Israelis.
TAKFIRS ARE INFILTRATED WITHIN TALIBANS AND KILLING
THEM AS WELL, WE HAVE TO FINISH WITH TAKFIRIS !!
Batilans strategie is to demolish all structural base, school,
just today Israel has bombarded a school killing 70
children, Israelis/indians are doing the same in Fata.
American, Israelis, Indians must be eliminated in Fata,
All the Islamic elements in NWFP have to join together to
get our common enemy. Inshallah.
first off, nice story good find and a very important issue..
rafay-of course this threat is potent, what are you talking about? even if one school is bombed or closed down the threat is potent.if you think its the israelis, the indians or whoever that doesn’t change the fact that it is still happening…what do you mean by “islamic elements” should join together?who? and who is the common enemy?
Go spread this to your converted Islamic Brethren (and in bred brethren)
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123128052408558763.html
The situation in Swat is threating and potent by every means. In addition to the threat to girls education many other discrimatory thing are happening there. Radio Mullahs have banned the women from going to markets for shoping. Only men are allowed to shop there. I also wrote a post about a same issue in my blog. Please read that as well, http://www.thestudentsview.blogspot.com.
@ not a Paki for sure,
you are anonymous, what can I do on your run away
face ?
@ Mirza ji,
@ Sheikh ji,
my respOnse to Reimas was indeed in condemnation of
such hoax, rumours, and anti-Islam fabricated news
time to time exploded here and there, you guys should
not start jumping up and down and quickly “condemn”
the muslims, TAKFIRIS ARE DOING ALL THOSE TERRORISM,
YOU GUYS ARE INTELLIGENT, I SUPPOSE , HOW CAN
TALIBAN HAVE THEIR RADIO ? DESPITE
HOSTILE PAK GOVT
US & INDO-ISRAELI MILITARY PRESENCE
THEY ARE DESTROYING EVERYTHING AND NAIVES LIKE YOU
START DANCING ON THEIR CHOPIN.
IN FATA AND NWFP, ALL THE MUSLIM GROUPS MUST JOIN
IN AND FIGHT THESE B A T I L A N S (INCLUDING TAKFIRIS)
INDIANS, ISRAELIS, USA AND KHAD AGENTS,
PAK ARMY HAVE ARRESTED SOME ASHKINAZIS COLOUR
ISRAELIS. (EUROPEAN JEWS)
(SEFARAD = MED.EASTERN JEWS )
Mirza ji, just go thru your comment once again and think
what are you saying !!
@KALSOOM,
NOT ” militant ban girls school…..”
its rather
Takfiri Batilans ban girls school……. and bomb every thing !!
The mindset of Rafay Kashmiri is part of the problem. If we keep misdiagnosing the problem with conspiratorial and paranoiac thinking (ie–the default blame the Israeli-Indian game), not only are the true culprits absolved, but the problem exacerbates while the finger is pointed in the opposite direction. I used to be this way, so I understand somewhat where he is coming from, but after receiving a college education and reading books, this mentality was dropped. This line of thinking is as cliche as wearing Che Guevara t-shirts in college. Time to grow out of it.
Reimas-
I agree – what does Israel/India/US have ANYTHING to do with this story? Why does everything turn into pointing fingers at scapegoats rather than admitting what has gone wrong within our nation? I am so tired of this hate rhetoric, it’s completely counterproductive – if you want someone to listen to you, don’t turn every argument into one filled with accusations, hatred, and intolerance. Or don’t insult other commentators, as well as me, by calling us naive, etc. If you don’t like our views, initiate a dialogue, don’t stomp around like a petulant child.
well said reimas and kalsoom..
Mr, rafay–the only way your theories ring true are if you believe that pakistan’s government, military and ISI have absolutely no control within our borders. Pakistan is not just a free-for-all for every intelligence to come in and wreak havoc as they please. I would like to think , while Pakistan is unstable and has a lack of law and order to an extent, it is still not a squatters sit for mossad and raw. Get realistic here, the logistics of what you propose are near impossible in reality
Remember when the US sent in the National Guard to facilitate the racial integration of public schools in the South? Would a similar show of strength backed by the Pakistan Army or security forces be possible in this situation? Again does the threat even warrant such a response? Recall that at that time, the KKK was a large and influencial organization in the south, making similar threats of bombings and violence, etc.
@ you guys really make me laugh, at your calculated
” naively fixed ” target blame game.
You don’t even want to hear about Takfiris collaborating
with Batilans in FATA and NWFP,
ANP, PPP MQM are collaborators !!
read again my comment, I am not going to repeat again.
There is a tussel between Pak Govt. & Pak Army and ISI.
Miza ji, is logistic any problem ?? where you have Mighty
NATO & US Forces sitting next door, having jam sessions
with Israeli and Indians enjoying tourism in the aea,
with drones visiting your citizens ? Sir, wake up !!!
Well said Kalsoom.
We need more people like this. http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/01/04/mideast/preacher.php
reimas- That is a very interesting parallel. I think the difference here is that the South was still under government control and the KKK was not a full-blown insurgency. I think before they can really have a show of strength for the schools, they have to control the area first. What are your thoughts, I like the parallel.
rafay—Yes actually logistics are a problem. Okay rafay, so despite who you think is responsible for everything in the region. Are you okay with preventing women from receiving an education? That is the crux of the story and you refuse to believe that that is even happening. If the Israelis and the Indians are responsible for it, as you so expertly are sure of, then they are obviously working with Pakistanis/Muslims (however you would like to identify them). Now if the prevention of these medieval bans is to take place then those Pakistanis on the ground who are facilitating these activities (under the auspices of the israelis and indians as you allege) have to be dealt with first. The larger conspiracy that you believe in can only be dealt with from the ground up. And sorry to say, but even your conspiracy theory, would not be possible without the help of Pakistanis/Muslims on the ground in those areas. Start from the ground up my friend.
Shaheryar,
I think this could provide an opportunity to the central government to gain a foothold in the region, where there is a lack of central government influence.
If the local security apparatus cannot protect it’s own young girls from attending schools, what better excuse is there for the central government security forces to negotiate its presence and collaborate (with the forward looking objective to increase collaboration with the local authority over time)? Who could argue against a mission framed as, “protecting the youth”? Perhaps its a strategy worthy of consideration.
@ Kashmiri
I belive it is the time to come out from the state of denial from acknowledging our own problems. The posibility of such militant groups having international links cannot be ruled out, we should realize that this is our prolem which needs to be solved. As Rafay saif above that are we okay to prevent the women from getting education?
Kulsoom,
I think you have summarized the issue with the question “who protects these families.” The Pak Army, ISI, and federal government all have shown no inclination towards addressing these problems.
I am by no means a consipracy nut but I am begining to wonder why the army fights when Punjab is threatened, but then scantifies the bloodshed of Pushtuns by taliban.
You may want to check this out for a daily look at life in Swat and the brutality of the Taliban. I believe that civil war has started and it is that for Pashtuns to stop looking to Pakistan for help. The perception that the Talib are all Pakhtuns is a big part of the problem. The Punjab exports their Taliban problem up north.
http://swatvalley.org/index.php/welcome/in-the-memory-of-abbas-khan
@sheikh ji,
lets not
deviate from the main subject !
who is against woman’s education ?
Takfiris, Tehrik -e-Taliban agents of Batilans.
the current Govt. is collaborating with Batilans
destroying schools, you simply don’t
have enough courage to admit, instead you are bringing in
links nothing to do with the problem, I repeat, your present
Govt is a puppet of Batilans, (Israeli,Indians,CIA,Khad).
” state of denial ” is from your side, Sir, you refuse to
believe that next door 2 km away there is NATO, US ARMY,
Israeli war experts with thousands of Indian regular Army,
to do what to perform before you Raag Darbari concert.???
@ali,
your information is absolutely doubtful, Talibans are all
I repeat, all are pukhtoons, whether Baluchis or Sarhadi,
try to use some logic !
“What kind of a god is it that’s upset by a cartoon in Danish?”
Salman Rushdie
Prologue: The Muslim Fury and its Impotence
From the ghettos of Bombay to the alleys of Beirut, from the tall minarets of Chittagong to the imposing domes of Birmingham, Islam is scaring the world like a terrifying dinosaur — its fiery tongue lashing out, its eyes red with tears of victimhood, its mind ravaged with the visions of the glories of the past, its whole body seething with rage at its wretched defeated present.
Islam is furious and the entire world is being seared by the flames of its outrage.
Why is Islam Angry?
Mussalmaans have one book. Koran. They should have another, too, detailing all the new legends, stories, and facts which have come to lay siege to the barren landscape of their closed minds.
The brutal stories are too many: Heads still hung down in mourning over the fall of Andalusia. Fists are frustratingly tightened over the unsuccessful Turkish sieges of Vienna. The decadence and fall of the Ottomans hurt like a rotten tooth.
Then there are shameful episodes of the near centuries: The fabled Mughal Empire of Hindustan compressed to present-day pathetic bubbles of Pakistan and Bangladesh, Jerusalem lost, Palestinians dumped, fellow Muslims massacred in periodic Indian riots, myths of Muslim blood coloring the Kashmiri and Chechnya mountainsides red, ungodly Amreekans camping over the holy sands of Mecca-Medina…
The Way They Were
Islam is a religion that once shined in innovation and dazzled the world with its scientific inventions and mathematical discoveries. Remember, algebra derived its name from the Arabic al-jabr, meaning ‘the reunion of broken parts’. The great Muslim astronomer Nasir ad-Din at-Tusi wrote the Book of the Transversal Figure, which was the first treatment of plane and spherical trigonometry as independent mathematical sciences.
Edward Gibbons in his fifth volume of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire had written that the science of chemistry owes its origin and improvements to the Muslims. The legendary Al Azhar University was founded in Cairo in 970 AD, making it older than Oxford — the oldest institution of higher learning in the English-speaking world.
Islam as a Beggar King
Today Islam resembles the last Mughal emperor of India – Bahadur Shah Zafar – whose writ was not obeyed even with the walls of his own palace in Delhi. He was thin, old, and dying. His skeleton figure, wrapped in unwashed, smelly, but royal kaftans and gowns, was exiled to Rangoon by the British in a buffalo cart!
This is what Islam has evolved itself into – the memories of the golden grandeur of the Past haunting the shameful poverty of the Present. The Muslims know it. They are grieving. They are hurt. They are ashamed.
They blame everybody but themselves for their state.
The Intellectual Retardation of Muhammad’s Children
Islam has plummeted to depths of ignorance and backwardness. The first word revealed to Muhamamd was ‘read’. Today they just read Koran. There are no great universities any longer in the world of Muslims. There are no invigorating publishing houses. There are no great authors coming from a religion which literally worships a book.
Incidentally, there are no good book shops in Pakistan, Bahrain or Saudia!
The few Islamic countries which are rich owe their wealth to the drilling of oil holes, not because of their people. The despots and kings of those lands waste their easy money in building more palaces and acquiring more jet planes. In the true traditions of the nouveau riche who lapped up fortunes by winning a lottery rather than doing hard work, the money is spent insensibly in a seriously flamboyant fashion.
This oil wealth, apart from being burned in pursuing private pleasures, is generously used to fund uneducated village mullahs to churn out atrocious fatwas, to build ugly tiled minarets in South Asia, to arm mad frenzied minds with bombs and missiles, to supply Korans, more Korans, more and more Korans for children to mug them up in the grimy madrasas of Xingjiang, Abuja, and Bukhara.
The early brilliance of Islam is gone and forgotten. What is left resembles a dog’s two-day-old rotting corpse that stinks up an entire neighborhood.
The Complete Muslim Dictionary – Fatwas, Kafirs, and Jehads
The apologists plead that these Koranic terms have been hijacked by people who have no religion. They reason that Jihad does not mean killing people but actually it is all about struggling against evil inside oneself. It is about trying to become a better person.
The endnote being that terrorism has no religion.
No. Terrorism has a religion. People are killed, raped, and burned alive because they belong to this religion or that. The verses, quotes, stories, and legends are selectively lifted by modern day prophets to justify the killings of the people belonging to a different religion.
This is a crisis faced by every religion in the world but Islam, thanks to a surplus of weapons and combustible substances that are amply stockpiled and easily accessible in the regions where it dominates, the murderous frenzy of this faith has become the most damaging and visible.
Islam — A No-Tolerance Zone
The non-Islamic world sees Islam as a group of followers with no tolerance.
They ask why the problem areas of the world chiefly consist of Muslim-populated regions. They ask why Muslims could not live in harmony alongside people not following their faith.
Why did Salman Rushdie have a death fatwa issued against him? Why couldn’t he freely roam the streets of Bombay – a city he loves and which has formed the backdrop of almost all his novels?
Why was there such intense fury against the Danish cartoons of Muhammad? Why does Allah seem so angry and his followers so violent?
The Rigidity and Hypocrisy
Do the Islamic societies exploit the free democracies of the rest of the world?
The Muslims happily leave their undemocratic, oil-rich, or oil-poor lands, to pursue happiness and wealth in free liberal countries. They make money, get educated, and are also free to recite Koran and perform five prayers a day. They have their own Friday mosques in their own neighborhoods in these foreign cities.
But their dictators and Imams do not allow the same benefits to non-Muslims in their own societies. There are no churches in Saudia. A non-Muslim cannot visit and attempt to understand the pull and magic of Allah in the al-Haram mosque of Mecca.
Saudia can send missionaries to India, fund Islamic societies there, but Hindus or Sikhs or Christians or Buddhists or Jains or Jews or Parsees in India cannot receive permission to propagate their respective faiths in Medina.
Islam appears to be a religion that has no qualms about using and exploiting other societies but remains reluctant to let it be equally open to outside influences.

@Indian,
nonsense has no limits, Hysteria can be hindu
as well !! you don’t suprise me!
why do you have
450 millions of DALITS ?
230 millions of those who have nothing to eat and wear
120 millions Indian kids to be adopted by EU USA
320 millions minorities at the point of extermination
Martial Law in Kashmir with 700.000 Indian army raping
killing muslims in custody, 120 millions already killed
The Indian Democracy and religion is called SECULARISM.
I don’t know, but there are a lot of people who say that a character of a country is determined by the state of minorities over there. I say BULLSHIT!! A state of country is determined by the state women. I am ashamed that India is definitely not right up there (somewhere near the bottom) but it is making progress, its really one of the countries where a lot needs to be done but we are definitely not walking backwards. It will be a sever blow to the nation if the threat is potent and the threat is not just to Pakistan but to entire world as such threats and there execution give new ideas to militants all over the world.
Like all you guys in Pakistan I have been brought up watching cricket matches with slogans like Hundustan/Pakistan Murdabad and to be fair I do used to get carried away. When I started to prepare for my B-school and I used to see India at number 134 on Human Development Index and Pakistan a slightly above, even then I used to get carried away and I wanted to look for the exceptions.
But that is what is called growing up and what education means to me and to Reimas. Education means accepting the problem and education also means looking beyond the problems. Well, education does not means playing anagrams TALIBANS/BATILANS and educations does not makes you anagrammatist, literacy does that.
@sameer,
btw, are you an educator, or a sociologue or a
teacher of liacity ?
Growing up is simply not enough,
it is in reality, how do you develop ” appriciation ”
of your environment, if you don’t react, negative or
possitive, then you still need to grow up !! being grown up
in one way only is certainly an intellectual deficiency.
with Batilans in FATA and NWFP,
ANP, PPP MQM are collaborators !!
Then why is it that the batilans are murdering exclusively politicians from the ANP ?
Get real, the batilans are the creation of ISI and they are pak-army in disguise.
Hi,
funny is not word for some participants. They blame israel and india for the problem they face in NWF. Taliban bombing schools and forcing girl to uneducation status.
thank god, the moderator sounds to be a resonable guy open to contrarian views.
For the guys here, if you say fire”does it burn your tongue”. When will these guys learn the english proverb “let thousand dogs bark the elephant walks unperturbed”
Why is that on the slightest provocation there is such a mess that nobody in the world would sympathize with islamic thoughts.
davinci code came and there was no problem in the west inspite of them being christian
Picture of sarawati nude by MF hussain did not receive so much attention but few agitation by hindiu radicals.
Why is that everything revolve on an eye to eye ? History is the reason for fight all religions which existed before 7 decade can claim that all other occupants are agressors. so there will no place for islam.
Sounds ridicoulous, yes many argument of islamic are in the same line
@vakibs,
you make me laugh, eliminating ANP is part of
the deal with Batilans as ANPs are an organised
anti-Pak activist since 1940 and are so called
elected, by killing them Talibans be blamed even more
you could have done better than your last phrase
which is rediculous. The Batilans never wanted to
include ISI in their ranks. That is why benazir’s
assassination, ISI has nothing to do with, but,
BATILANS, YES. Wake up !!! there is slight difference
who are together and who is with who !!!
@Satwa Gunam,
you don’t get it ! not everybody thinks like Indians
and Indians don’t think like other normal human beings !!
simply rallying with the ” west ” should ‘nt be indian goal
only !!
[…] schools in Swat closed in compliance with the Taliban edict banning girls’ education, [see CHUP’s past coverage on the ban announcement]. According to BBC News, “Owners say the schools will not reopen until the conflict in Swat […]
@ Kalsoom dear,
I can’t find out Sagarika Ghosh’s pearls,
wanted to felicitate her for the performance
and the rebuttles she got from Jethmalani,
oh ! I wish I could have replaced Jethmalani !!
good half of Indian media is religious extremists
and racists, they should be taught a good lesson !
I was wondering if anyone could tell me how The Central Asia Institute has been able to get permission to build so many schools for girls in Pakistan? Are the girls being put a risk simply because he schools exist?
Nola-
Is the Central Asia Institute run by Greg Mortenson – the guy who wrote Three Cups of Tea? I’m guessing it might be in his book, which I have at home. I’ll look at it and get back to you!
@ Nola Shepardson,
No, not at all, the modest educational structure is
also affected like any other rural structed is in FATA
and NWFP. The foreign interferences and the local wrong
weak policies are main problem, private mafia schooling
system exist, plus the foreign powers ideological influence
is resisted. plus, you have world powers fighting there with
drones and ultra modern armament, the children, women
and old are the main victims. It will be soon in order, I hope.
hi guys
im a south african of Indian ancestry- i am quite active in the Tablighi jamaat- i have been to Swat & peshawar & even to Afghanistan in 2002 & 2005.
i dont know exactly whats happening now but i do know that western “aid” organisations are most often than not fronts for nefarious activities.
its easy to dupe the locals (this is changing) and the many pro-western, pro modernism muslim journalists.
many aid workers, journalists and embassy/consular staff are spies , christian missionaries or sometimes involved with the mercenaries from firms like Blackwater.
so i think that there is much more to it than “these crazy fundamentalist taliban dont want the girls to be educated”
there must be a reason, cos i know 100% that the taliban are not against girls education but they are against immorality , vice, immodesty and converting muslims to christianity.
as for Reuters, AP, AFP, API – they are all owned by the Zionists/Rothschilds- i will not believe a word from them.
another thing i forgot-
which muslim liberal or otherwise thinks the Tablighi jamaat is a “radial movement” or that we “sponsor terrorism”?
this is the type of bull that is being found in western media, increasingly so.
all the muslims will say that this is a lie- its easy to fool westerners- anyone with a real beard, islamic garb, tuban, pants above the ankles, avoids associating with women etc- “he must be one of them!”
The tablighi Jamaat is 101% apolitical and shuns all talk of politics & violence- they even avoin talking of Jihad which is a part of islam- they , instead, focus on imaan (belief_ and the 5 daily prayers and to inculcate good habits & character etc.
greg mortensen is a Christian missionary & i dont think he is there only to build & run schools- he wants to “save those poor misguided muslim girls” by converting them to christianity or at least create doubt about islam-and this is most probably why the taliban are bombing these schools
this is an excerpt from Greg Mortensens book:
“perhaps the most controversial, is our Islamic studies for about two or three hours every week. It’s very tempered, and we include in that learning the differences between Sunni and Shia. We’ve also added what you might call religion studies, or learning about different faiths or religion”
PS-i would personally bomb these schools for confusing these children. of course- id ensure there were NO children inside (only Greg Mortensen)
I’m sorry are you justifying the bombing of these schools? And what proof do you have that Greg Mortenson is a Christian missionary – is it just because he’s American that you assume he must have some ulterior motive?
i dont know why you deleted my last 2 posts.
anyway- please understand- these childrens Imaan is at stake.
here in South Africa we dont even do comparitive religion studies in our schools or even teach about Shia ism.
this sort of thing is done in Darul Ulooms where the students have sufficient knowledge of Islaam & are old enough to know whats going on.
are you a muslim?
do you understand how serious the situation is?
do you think getting an “education” is more important than losing your Imaan?
Insha Allah you will understand .
What you are suggesting, mohammed, is evil. Bombing schools will only hurt those children even more. Read Mortenson’s book before attacking him. His goal has never been to convert to Christianity, only to provide a balanced and moderate education. As to losing their Imaan, knowledge of other religions will not destroy one’s Imaan. Personal experience shows that such knowledge can strengthen it and help it grow. If these children have good Muslim parents, their questions can only lead them into a greater understanding of Islam.
And as for the Taliban “not being against girl’s education,” they have a nasty tendency to use acid to burn the faces off girls who they find in school. I think that speaks for itself.
http://www.awid.org/eng/Issues-and-Analysis/Library/10-Taliban-arrested-in-school-girl-acid-attack
