Ali Nawaz-ish from Rawalpindi broke a world record when he passed 23 A-levels in subjects including pure mathematics, travel and tourism, and sociology. The 18 year old received 21 A grades and a B and a C, and will be a part of the Guinness Book of World Records for his achievement. Now studying Computer Science at Cambridge University, Ali sat all the exams within 12 months at Rawalpindi’s Roots College International. “His entry was organized through accredited boards Ed-Excel and Cambridge International Examinations,” reported the UK’s Daily Mail. Although he describes himself as a mediocre student when he was younger, he told news agencies, “Then one day it all clicked. I needed to prove to myself, and to others, that I could do it.” Ali told The News, “I had no set study plans and at one point I found myself studying one subject for five minutes before switching to the other and then the next and so on.” The Daily Mail added, “Ali also achieved a top score in the U.S. admissions test and was accepted by most Ivy League institutions, including Harvard and Yale. Apart from core science subjects he is almost entirely self taught. He studied for up to 12 hours a day, using energy drinks to help concentrate.”
So in a country that has been marred by terrorism, violence, economic problems, and political dissidence, it’s really wonderful to read stories about Pakistanis that highlight the positives in the country. Congratulations Ali!
Good for Ali! Making Pakis proud 🙂
This is absolutely amazing! Not only is it great to see a Pakistani student gain so much recognition for his academic achievement….but he’s also from RAWALPINDI!
He chose Cambridge over Harvard and Yale??! Maybe the guy isn’t so smart after all!
I think Cambridge was his dream, so who knows Confused, who knows…
Wow! What an accomplishment.
Sadly, this has gone unnoticed in the media. Maybe the media does not have the time to cherish world records set by Pakistani citizens.

Hammad-
I do know that Ali was interviewed on GEO the other day, and The News and the Daily Times did articles about him. He also was interviewed on BBC News – http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/7863473.stm
The problem is not that the media didn’t notice him, I don’t think our government paid him much recognition, or that they even knew about this.
That is really impressive! It is definitely refreshing to read something positive related to Pakistan/Pakistanis.
I only hope Pakistan does more to keep these valuable human resources within the country. I agree with Hammad and Kalsoom that the government should treat him as something of a hero to encourage more students to imitate him. Give him a “key to the city” or something!
Brilliant!
Dang! I couldn’t even do 23 O Levels if I was given three years…forget about 23 A Levels…
I saw it a couple of days back on the BBC website and fell in love with this guy. Such self effacing manner and humility in one so young. I was truly impressed.
As for choosing Cambridge over Harvard and Yale, a lot of people are doing that now, choosing British Universities over American, because it takes a lot longer in US to get the degrees. I chose Manchester over NYU and LSE (i got in both the universities) because the subject I wanted to study had highest academic rating and the best employment record in Manchester University.
Gone are the days when people would choose a university for its name alone.
Well done Ali and thank you for this wonderful story Kalsoom. Pakistan Zindabad!
Maybe Ali can tell the Parliment, Senate & the Government at large about the energy drink so they can devote just 2 hours a day at getting the country going in the right direction. Who am I kidding……these clowns will only add more confusion & misery for the ordinary citizens of Pakistan. We will have to wait for the Alis of the world to finish & come back & fix what is left of this beautiful country of ours……How very sad.
Amazing…Congrats Ali!
fantastic brother!!!
truly remarkable achievement.
keep it up.
@ extraordinary human capacity.
well done, we are proud of you Ali Nawazish
Kulsoom-
I am sure the government is not aware of it. They seem to be solely focused on having a PPP jiyala on the seat of the senate chairman for the first time in the history of Pakistan.

to ‘O’
what do you mean by “but he’s also from RAWALPINDI!”?
are pakistani’s or people from rawalpindi low in some way?
atleast they are muchh better and want to achieve more so please refrain from such comments..
its great what he did, he is a pretty stuck up person. thinks too big of himself.
i’m proud of him none the less..
Pakistan is a country full of very intelligent people but they dont get the chance due to lack of resources and directions.
Sophia, what made you think that I was implying that ppl from Pindi are “low.” I was expressing excitement because I’m from there as well. Maybe YOU should refrain from jumping to conclusions.
Excellent brov, u make me and the whole Pakistani Nation proud of ur self. May Allah bless u in ur upcoming future.
Kulsoom-
Maybe the government heard us 😛

That’s great! Thanks for the link Hammad 🙂
Very impressive… but a little bit pointless. Why not just do a few A-levels, and then get a couple of extra degrees under his belt? A-levels mean little to employers, whereas university degrees are highly cherished.
But yeah, incredible achievement. Puts the rest of us to shame.
shaabash ali……..its really impresive…may Allah bless u
Excellent Achievement . Great man , You make us proud as a pakistani

Amazing,scoring 21 A’s is not a joke.
Especially in a country like Pakistan where there is no electricity at times, terrorrism, violence etc.And overcoming all of it is amazing
But the sad part is the media did not emphasis this achievement which they should have. And people hardly know abt this besides the Pakistani’s.
If Ali Nawazish was a indian he would have been on bbc probably.Indians know how to be in the lime light
Yasser-
Ali Nawazish WAS on the BBC, he was interviewed a few days before I wrote this post. He was also interviewed by GEO.
so in what did he get a B and a C??
We are proud of you Mr. Ali Nawazish, well done great job as pakistani. I convey my Congrats.. to you on your record achievement.
May Allah bless u in ur future.
Hi Ali
Remarkable achievement, i am proud of you. I hope, this is the beginning and you will set new records in Cambridge.
I have two relations with you one is we are from same city Rawalpindi and second is St Mary’s Academy Rawalpindi. I taught in SMA 10 years back.
I know ALI NAWAZISH that I have only one relation with you that we both are just PAKISTANI andyou made me so emotional that i cried. Please tell the whole of the Pakistan that we are “ONE”. “ONE” numerically very weak but theoratically very strong. Tell the Nation that everyONE of us is a part of The Nation. You played a big role if ONE can’t play that big role doesn’t matter, but atleast try to be part of it.
u make us proud ! congrats
and best wish for ur future …..
keep it up …chose profession that make pakistan a single nation.
best of luck for future

a passionate student just needs best luck…..
Living in the western world proves itself to be quite anti towards you if you are a visible minority and especially if you are a Brown .
Blacks were but now Browns are targeted and probably one won’t feel the disgusting looks and ridiculous taunts while working in some professional field but try driving a cab or any other grass root level job then you will find yourself surrounded by Trash with all it’s evilness .
Shut them up by doing what Ali did or what Dr AbdusSalam Did .
It’s time for us especially Muslims and Pakistanis to come out of Zia and Bhuttoism and do some thing in the fields of education .
The fields of self findings , spiritualism and research are virtually lacking knowledge seekers and are only dominated by trash minded bleach skinned satanic minded humans . Why not we go ahead and do some thing there .
Might is right and forget Kashmir or Palestine cuz we won’t be able to regain them from global bullies untill unless we control the global markets .
The only way is to build ourselves and to gain knowledge .
Well done Ali , you made me feel proud of my heritage .

ITS REALY PROUD TO BE PAKISTANI AFTER THIS ACHIEVMENT OF ALI BHAI AND ITS TRUE THAT OUR MEDIA ONLY GIVE US THE NEWS OF DOWNFALL OF PAKISTAN NOT THE ACHIEVMENT. AND I PERSONALLY GIVE CONGRATS TO OUR ALI BHAI, AND WANT ONE SUGGESTION THAT I AM IN 7TH CLASS THE CITY SCHOOL WILL DO O & A LEVEL SO WANTED TO GIVE ME ANY SUGGESTION RELATED TO STUDIES BECAUSE LIKE ALI BHAI I ALSO WANT TO MAKE PAKISTAN’S AND MY PARENTS NAME (ROSHAN).
we r very proud of ppl like him and pakistanis should be united and shout at the World we r not terroists only as it is shown worldwide we excell in education as well. ppl think pakistanis are loosers they r illiterate n can not even think of breaking world records
